Saturday, November 17th, 2012

The WA Innovator of the Year Awards is one of Western Australia’s most prestigious business and innovation awards programs.

We were selected to produce 9 creative and informative background video stories for each of the finalists. This was broadcast on the awards night as well as used to further promote the finalists achievements to an international audience online. The production included the express turnaround of the videos (production taking place between the finalist announcement and event date) and also included the video graphics production for the multimedia display at the event.

Working with Paul at L3 Nautronix in Fremantle, He has recently returned from Hollywood director, James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge dive to the earth’s deepest point. Paul’s team created the underwater communications technology here in WA to survive the 11km decent to the ocean floor! James Cameron’s 3D documentary about the dive should be out early next year.

Finalist – A Floating Droplet Solution to Oil Spills

Filming Dr Chi working on his solution to break down oil spills at Curtin University

Dr Chi & Prof Moses from Curtin University have invented a solution to break down oil spills in the ocean which is environmental friendly compared to the current use of solvents. It makes water droplets float on top of the oil which capture the sunlight to degrade the oil. Go WA innovations!

Finalist – The HIVAP Airconditioning System

Interviewing Graeme who has invented over 80 things in his lifetime!

Interviewing Graeme who has invented over 80 things in his lifetime!

Who remembers the DirtSurfer? (Pictured Bottom Right, in the above image) It made world news and was invented by Graeme here in the late 90’s. We discovered this when filming his new high efficiency evaporative air-conditioning system, HIVAP. Turns out he has invented over 80 things including a lot of well known windsurfing and surfing technology. What an inspirational conversation… and guy! Kristen had to drag me away to the next shoot in the end.

Winner – Novel Treatment for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Professor Steve Wilton from the University of Western Australia has developed a novel treatment for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – a genetic disorder that affects boys and results in muscle degeneration and eventually death. A very humbling and awe inspiring interview. A very worthy winner.

Do you know how to maintain your car? Host training videos

host training video How Do I Maintain My Car

Recently we were hired by Evolve Curriculum Development & Training / Department of Education to create a short car maintenance video. This video actually features Craig as the host who not only acted as the presenter but also educator on how to top up the oil in your car right through to changing a tyre.

How a host can help:

Using an engaging host in a training video is a great technique to make the information you wish to impart memorable. They will help the viewer’s attention span remain focused as the host is talking directly to them.

I thought Craig did an amazing job. Who would not benefit from watching this?

Craig volunteered to be host in this video

Electronic tablets sure make in car camera monitoring a lot easier now days.

How we had to mount the camera in order to get the in car stuff (upside down!)

The camera rigged up to some suction cups, on camera light and a wide angle lens

Hilarious fun fact;

I videoed and edited this segment myself and then a couple of months later, I had to watch it back on my smartphone via youtube when my mum’s car tyre needed changing. I did it solely on watching the video and it was the first time I had ever changed a tyre!

Narrative role play training video

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

Narrative role play in a training video is such a powerful technique that is both engaging and memorable. We were hired by Evolve to produce a scene which was to be acted in two different ways to be used as a training technique.  These two different scenes are meant to show the difference on how the main character “Fazio” can be more assertive in getting her point across to her friend and driving instructor without being rude.

This video was produced in conjunction with other supported material so as a stand alone video it may appear a little obscure. However you can still see how engaging professional actors can be in a training video.

I just love working with such talented Perth actors. They were a dream.

The beauty of shooting outdoors – dealing with the weather!

This hail turned a 3 hour shoot into a 7 hour shoot! It was a terrific day though and it was awesome to meet some great people.

Cockburn Ice Arena Promotional Video

Monday, September 17th, 2012

Here is a small business promotional video we did for Cockburn Ice Arena. I know what your first question is “how did you walk on the ice and film without falling over?” Well MacGuyver (Craig) came up with the ingenious idea of “screw shoes” Surprisingly they worked a treat!

Golf…”Accurately” Commentated- Corporate Event Video Production

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

Every year the Royal Bank of Canada Capital Markets put on an annual corporate golf day for their clients at Joondalup Resort. Knowing our comedic background (Craig’s youtube videos) they asked us if we could provide event video coverage of the day to be played at a gala dinner the following evening. The only requirements we were given was that it had to be funny and it had to be edited in only a few hours.

Best part was we got to drive around a golf cart all day!

Testimonial:
“This is the 4th year we have been doing videos. This is by far the best one we have had.
On the event night the crowd was in hysterics for the whole duration of the video.”

Working with Microsoft in Perth – Partnership Video

Saturday, June 30th, 2012

We recently were asked to produce a video detailing one of Microsoft’s partnership success stories in Perth. The production required close attention to matching the existing visual style and theme of the current videos in the USA. This was to provide clean continuity when the videos went live online and were used within an international conference.

As much we looked, for the entire Microsoft shoot, we did not see one i-pad or i-phone…strange…

“Great job on everything – your support footage was beautiful!
Thank you again for your help with this.”

We loved being part of this project. It was so motivating talking to other business owners and listening to their struggles and how they overcame them. Definitely a watch if you would like to hear what it is really like owning a business, especially in the tourism industry.

Craig goes viral on Youtube – Our online video with over 1 million views

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

As video producers, every now and then when time prevails, it is great to shoot something for no other reason than the fun and the creativity of it. Recently Craig’s short comedic solution to our ongoing neighbourhood cat problem has gone global!
Between Youtube and some foreign video websites (who pinched it :-p ) the video has now received over 1 million views and now online is the most viewed short film ever produced in Western Australia.

While having an underlying message of responsible pet ownership, The video shows Craig’s improvised humane solution to our ongoing problem with neighbourhood cats urinating on our property, including our cars!

With what has been amusingly described as a “MacGyver like solution” Craig improvises a defense mechanism from automotive and household items. Putting his camera rigging skills to the test he then documented the results for the world to enjoy with a combination of night vision, motion sensors, and high resolution photos.

Some facts we thought were interesting:

  • For a period in May according to TrendsMap the video was the second most discussed video in Australia on twitter, just one spot behind lady gaga’s latest song.
  • Shortly after upload the clip received over 200,000 views in a 48hour period.
  • The video has just under 800,000 views on Youtube.
  • The video has been featured in numerous online humor, technical and media websites worldwide including The Guardian UK.

Most interesting for us has been seeing the potential global promotional power of online video, whether it be for a message, idea or product. Considering the video was not at all intended for promotional purposes, it is interesting that we have had requests from numerous people who are ready and wanting to purchase the cat spray.

Check out the video below and tell us know what you think on facebook

Are tree crops the future of WA’s Wheatbelt?

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

In Shot Productions Kristen Farlekas shooting at a new brushwood plantation

Covering an area larger than Tasmania, late last year we ventured into the far corners of the Western Australian whealtbelt, to film how WA farmers are benefiting from tree crops.

Produced for the Australian Sandalwood Network, the first video is a short documentary on Sandalwood production and its deep history in Western Australia’s wheatbelt.

Did you know? Sandalwood was once Western Australia’s biggest export commodity, also Sandalwood oil is a ingredient in some of the world’s favorite perfumes including “Obsession” by Calvin Klein and “Opium” by Yves St Laurent. Sandalwood – “The Golden Harvest” can be viewed here.

The second video is a series of Interviews of Farmers sharing their stories on the benefits of treecrops which was produced for Avongro Wheatbelt tree cropping. “Greener Horizons – 5 Western Australian farmers share their experience with tree crops. ” can be viewed here.

Thank you to all the families who put us up for the night during our travels through the wheat belt and for you assistance and contribution to the shoot.

Kinetic Ball Sculpture Re-Launch – The Rockingham Ball Machine

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Rockingham’s Kinetic Ball Sculpture or “ball machine” is a one of a kind sculpture created by George Rhoads. This iconic sculpture resided at Rockingham City Shopping Centre and entertained children and adults alike for years. The sculpture was removed from the shopping centre when the centre went through a demolish and then a massive upgrade a few years ago. Once the upgrade was complete the ball machine was not returned. The people of Rockingham started a facebook page to bring the sculpture back and Rockingham City Shopping Centre listened. We were then lucky enough to be hired to film the re-opening of the Ball Machine sculpture.

A real feel-good project to be part of.
